Kenyan VP meets South Sudan leader

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 9 – Kenya will lead the way in ensuring that the verdict of the people of Southern Sudan in the forthcoming referendum is respected.

Speaking when he held talks with the Southern Sudan President Dr Salva Kiir Mayardit in Nairobi, Kenya’s Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka expressed optimism that the referendum to determine whether Southern Sudan becomes an independent country or remains part of United Sudan would be peaceful and successful.

“It is the hope of Kenya that all the players will remain committed to the outcome of the referendum under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) which was signed here in Nairobi in January 2005,” Mr Musyoka noted.

The Vice President welcomed the assurance given by the President of Sudan Omar Al-Bashir and Dr Kiir during their respective inauguration ceremonies, to uphold the out come of the referendum and all the provisions of the CPA.

As a friendly neighbour, Mr Musyoka added, Kenya was keen on seeing that peace and prosperity prevails in Sudan and other countries in the region.

Dr Kiir is in the country where he expected to hold talks with the visiting US Vice President Joe Biden and hold meetings with Kenya leaders.

“These meetings are aimed at strengthening our bilateral relations with these countries,” Dr Kiir who is also the United Sudanese Vice President noted.

Also in attendance was the Sudanese Ambassador to Kenya Dr Majok Guandong.
