Chinese party leaders visit Kenya

NAIROBI, Kenya, June 3 – President Mwai Kibaki has held discussions with senior officials of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) led by the Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), Wang Gang who paid him a courtesy call.

During the talks, President Kibaki and Mr Wang discussed among others areas of mutual interest between the two countries. 

The president hailed the existing cordial relations between Kenya and China which continued to gain momentum over the years due to exchange visits at all levels.

Under the Forum for China Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), Kenya is among African countries which have benefitted from preferential loans, a fund to encourage Chinese investment in Africa and preferential buyers Credit all totaling over Sh10 billion. 

On Economic and Technical Cooperation, Kenya and China have signed agreements and Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) in various fields, including, energy, Education, Health, Agriculture and Cooperative Development.

The visit by Mr Wang comes on the heels of a successful state visit to the People’s Republic of China by President Kibaki and is aimed at further strengthening relations between the two countries.

The visit will also enhance collaboration between the Communist Party of China and Party of National Unity (PNU), Orange Democratic Party (ODM) and ODM Kenya, the three major political parties in the Kenyan coalition government.

Mr Wang, whose African trip also covers Zimbabwe and Egypt, was accompanied by Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Deng Hongbo among other senior officials.

The talks were attended by Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and Cabinet Ministers Prof Geroge Saitoti, Moses Wetangula , Mutula Kilonzo and Head of Public Service and Secretary to the Cabinet Amb Francis Muthaura among other senior government officials.
