NAIROBI, Kenya, May 24 – Bonchari Member of Parliament Charles Onyancha is the latest victim of armed crime in Nairobi after he was carjacked and driven around the city for over four hours on Sunday night. The legislator was accosted by four armed men in Hazina estate within South B where he had gone to visit a friend, according to his lawyer Cliff Omcapitalfmnew.
Mr Omcapitalfmnew told reporters that the MP was then bundled into the back seat of his four-wheel drive vehicle, sandwiched between thugs and robbed of all his possessions at the time before the vehicle was driven to various destinations in town.
The MP’s vehicle was used to block several other motorists who were robbed of money and other belongings. The gang then escorted him to ATM machines where they withdrew a substantial amount of money.
“He also lost a pistol and a magazine with 15 rounds of ammunition. Police have not been able to trace the vehicle but investigations are going on,” Mr Ndubi told reporters at the Gigiri police station.
Journalists who were camping at the station to speak to the MP, did not succeed to get an interview.
Police officers at the station told Capital News that the lawmaker was at the station recording a statement but even after finishing with the detectives, he declined to come out.
Instead, it is his lawyer who briefed journalists and pleaded with us to leave as his client was too busy to answer our questions.
Embakasi divisional police Chief David Bunei told Capital News that no suspect had been arrested in connection with the attack.
“We have launched an investigation in collaboration with our counterparts in Gigiri, but no arrest or recovery has been made,” Mr Bunei said.
The incident comes barely three days after the driver of Nakuru Town MP Lee Kinyanjui was carjacked in Muthaiga and the official vehicle he was driving used to block five motorists elsewhere.
Early last month, the driver of Local Government assistant minister Lewis Nguyai was shot dead by gangsters who waylaid him just after dropping his boss.
The incident occurred near the driver’s home in King\’eero, Kikuyu.
Nairobi Provincial Police chief Antony Kibuchi told Capital News that he had constituted a team to specifically pursue the new gang that has been targeting legislators and other prominent personalities’ vehicles.
“We have the resources and personnel to carry out investigations and maintain security in Nairobi. It is just a matter of time,” Mr Kibuchi said.
