Jonathan says electoral body will be transparent

ABUJA, May 11 – Nigeria\’s new President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday vowed that his administration would put in place an electoral body that will organise elections acceptable to the international community.

Nigeria, Africa\’s most populous nation, has a history of flawed and violent polls.

"We will come up with a national electoral body that will conduct elections that will meet the expectations of Nigerians and the international community who are demanding free and fair elections next year," he said.

A statement from his office said he spoke during a meeting with officials from the opposition ANPP party.

Shortly after his inauguration as president on Thursday Jonathan reiterated his commitment to free and fair polls in 2011 and electoral reforms.

He recently removed the head of the nation\’s electoral agency, Maurice Iwu, who has been accused of organising flawed elections roundly condemned by both local and foreign observers for failing to meet internationally acceptable standards.

Iwu\’s five-year tenure would have ended in June and many opposition politicians, organisations and individuals had called for his removal or a non-renewal of his mandate.
