Shot officer in ICU at Kenyan hospital

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 26 – A senior police officer who was seriously wounded during a shoot out with suspected gangsters on Nairobi’s River Road on Friday is still admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Nairobi Hospital.

Corporal Mohammed Shukri who heads a special police unit code-named SPIV and based at the Central Police station was shot as he pursued a wanted gangster on River Road.

The suspect who was armed with a pistol was eventually shot dead by officers who had accompanied Mr Shukri.

On Monday afternoon, the Nairobi District Security and Intelligence Committee (NSIC) led by its chairman Ben Gachichio visited the officer at the hospital.
He was also accompanied by Nairobi Central Divisional Police chief Richard Muguai and his CID counterpart Festus Malinge.

A group of journalists who accompanied them to the hospital were granted permission to see the officer, on condition that his pictures would not be taken.

“You can see he is responding well to treatment… we are all praying for him and are happy that the hospital is taking good care of him,” Mr Gachichio who is also District Commissioner for Starehe said.

“This officer was shot in the neck, but the report we are receiving from the hospital is that he is in a serious but stable condition,” Mr Gachichio added.

The officers’ family was also at the hospital but they were reluctant to grant an interview.

Mr Muguai, under whom Mr Shukri worked described him as a very obedient and hardworking police officer who is determined to deliver successfully.

“Shukri is a hardworking officer, we are praying for him,” Mr Muguai said.

His CID counterpart Mr Malinge said “it is very unfortunate that he was shot while on duty.”

Mr Shukri’s colleagues told their seniors they received information that the suspect was in the River road area, when they came face to face with him.

“They confronted him but before they could arrest him, he whipped out a pistol and shot at the officer who was leading the team, his colleagues immediately gunned him down because he was ready to finish all of them,” Mr Muguai said.

Reports indicate that the suspect had been monitoring police communication because he was found with a police radio.

Police believe he was part of a gang whose five members had earlier been slain by officers on Kenyatta Avenue, near the 680 Hotel at midnight.

But even as police were visiting a victim of shooting [this time their own officer], another shootout erupted in the center of Nairobi during which three people were shot and seriously wounded.

The two men and a woman were shot by fleeing gangsters from Mama Ngina Street in broad daylight.

Police and witnesses said the three were shot by some four young men who started shooting while running away, after spotting police officers on patrol [see separate story].
