Kibaki meets Kenyan lawmakers

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 12 – President Mwai Kibaki on Monday met and held discussions with legislators drawn from the larger Meru region at his Harambee House Office.

The discussions focused on various development projects initiated in the region and other pending projects that would unlock the full potential for the benefit of the local people and the nation at large.

During the occasion, President Kibaki assured the legislators that the government was steadfast in ensuring fair resource distribution and equitable development in all parts of the country.

He affirmed that no region of the nation shall be denied the chance of exploiting and achieving full potential for the benefit of local people and the entire nation.

The President cited the case of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) that was being allocated to all constituencies in the country.

He called for prudent allocation and utilisation of the funds at the grassroots

The leaders, who thanked President Kibaki for his visionary and development-oriented leadership, appreciated government’s efforts towards improving the living standards among Kenyans and bringing essential services closer to the public.

The lawmakers led by Energy Minister Kiraitu Murungi affirmed that the creation of more districts in the region had considerably improved security in the area.

The MPs appealed to the government to supply security agencies and the provincial administration with adequate transport and other necessary equipment for effective patrols and timely response to security emergencies.

The legislators noted that there was need to refurbish various urban and rural roads both for security reasons as well as to boost economic activities in the area, particularly farming.

With regard to the land issues the leaders appreciated President Kibaki’s tireless efforts to resolve land and boundary disputes nationwide.

They appealed for the implementation of a crash programme similar to the one undertaken in Coast Province to urgently conclude land adjudication and issuance of title deeds in various districts of the region.

The legislators urged the President to make a good will tour of the region.

In attendance was the Minister for Internal Security Prof George Saitoti, legislators from the larger Meru region and senior government officials.
