Mozambique hit by floods

MAPUTO, Mar 3 – Flooding along the Zambezi River has forced more than 900 people to flee from their homes in the central Mozambican province of Sofala, independent media reported Wednesday.

The region has been hit since last week by heavy rains that flooded the Zambezi and its tributaries, forcing more than 200 families from their homes, said independent newspaper O Pais.

"The government is working at this moment to evacuate people who are in low-lying areas," government spokesman Henrique Banze told O Pais.

Banze added that Mozambican authorities needed to work with their counterparts in neighbouring Zimbabwe and Malawi to limit the release of water from upstream dams along the Zambezi and its tributaries.

Mozambique is a frequent victim of flooding during its rainy season.

Deadly floods in 2000 and 2007 forced tens of thousands from their homes.
