NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 5 – Police have arrested two prime suspects following the theft of over Sh300 million that was being ferried by G4S in Mombasa over a fortnight ago.
The two suspects who include the driver of the van that was ferrying the cash were arrested on Friday in Athi River, according to police.
“The two are now in custody and are being interrogated to help in the recovery of more money,” a senior police officer said but declined to reveal the exact amount of money recovered from the suspects.
“They have been on the run for a while now but now we have them. This is a breakthrough in the investigation,” the officer said.
He said the suspects would be taken to Malindi and other suburbs in the Coastal region for searches in houses they are believed to have occupied after the theft.
Last week, police arrested another suspect who was found in possession of Sh17 million which was believed to have been part of the over Sh300 million stolen in Mombasa.
After a search at the suspect’s house in Kitengela police found new electronic goods and furniture worth over Sh500,000 which was impounded.
Police said at the time they had information suggesting that the property was bought using proceeds of the stolen cash.
“We have reason to believe the furniture and other property in this house was purchased using the money that was stolen,” Coast Provincial Police chief Reche Nyagah who is leading the investigation said at the time.
The suspect has since appeared in court but he denied the charges.
Police on Friday said they were still looking for more suspects believed to have worked in cahoots with the G4S staff.
“Although we have arrested all the prime suspects, it does not mean that we have completed the investigation. The file is still open… anyone with information is welcome to share it with us,” another officer said.
