Councillor recalls beating in Juja

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 2 – A witness on Tuesday told an election court that he was beaten up by supporters of a former MP three days to the polling day.

Morrison Muriuki told Justice Luka Kimaru that he sustained serious injuries from the beatings he suffered in the hands of supporters of William Kabogo.

He said he was treated and discharged at Ruiru hospital adding that he later lodged a complaint with the police. Mr Muriuki told the court that he suffered a broken jaw following the attack and the matter was still in pending in court.

While supporting sentiments for the dismissal of the election petition filed by Mr Kabogo against George Thuo, the witness who is also a nominated councillor, told the court that the petitioner should not be allowed to benefit from his malpractices.

According to him, it was Mr Kabogo who used threats, intimidation and physical violence against his opponent’s supporters, hence breaching electoral code of conduct and Election Offences Act.

He also claimed that Mr Kabogo and his agents walked out of the tallying hall after sensing defeat. He said the walkout was staged shortly before the formal announcement of the results.

“He walked out when it became manifest that he had lost the election to Mr Thuo,” he said. The current MP, who is also the government chief whip, won the seat by 52,321 votes against Mr Kabogo’s 32,987.

Mr Muriuki is the second witness to be called by Mr Thuo to his defence. Two others are set to testify on Wednesday.
