Canada busts drugs ring

MONTREAL, Mar 12 – Canadian police said Thursday they broke up a ring of traffickers bringing in illegal drugs and weapons from the United States.

At least 22 people were arrested in the operation, which recovered guns, cocaine and marijuana, the Ontario Provincial Police said.

The seven-month investigation focused on a criminal organization operating in the Toronto area.

"The illegal smuggling and selling of guns by organized crime groups poses a grave danger to innocent people in our communities and is frequently associated with the illegal drug trade," said Julian Fantino, commissioner of the Ontario Provincial Police.

"The Provincial Weapons Enforcement Unit and its policing partners are committed to dismantling these criminal enterprises."

The investigation was led by the provincial police with local agencies as well as the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
