12 killed in Kenya road smash

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 24 – Twelve people were killed and 26 others seriously injured in a road accident which occurred in Voi on Wednesday morning.

Police said the accident occurred when a bus ferrying passengers to Malindi from Nairobi collided head-on with a light truck, killing the 12 passengers on the spot.

“Twelve people have lost their lives. It was a head-on collision involving the two vehicles,” a police officer who visited the scene said.

“Twenty six other passengers who were injured have been admitted to the Voi district hospital, but most of them are in a stable condition.”

He said bodies of those killed were taken to the Coast Provincial General Hospital “because the capacity of the mortuary at Voi district hospital is too small to accommodate that number.”

The officer said the bus driver was among those killed in the accident that occurred at 3 am at Ndara area, less than three kilometers from Voi town.

He said: “An investigation had shown the accident occurred after the bus driver tried to overtake another vehicle before it collided head on with a truck that was carrying scrap metal.”

Police said the driver and turn boy of another truck which overturned at the scene moments after the initial accident were among those admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the second accident occurred after the driver attempted to avoid hitting the wreckages of the two vehicles.

The rate of deaths caused as a result of road accidents has been on the increase lately, with police blaming many of them on reckless driving.
