Life sentence for Kenya serial rapist

NYAHURURU, Kenya, Jan 12 – A 58-year-old man was on Tuesday jailed for life by a Nyahururu court after he was found guilty of defiling three underage sisters.

Daniel Mwangi Irungu pleaded guilty when he appeared before Nyahururu Senior Resident Magistrate Alice Mongare where he was charged with the offence.

Prosecuting officer Chief Inspector Fredrick Makabila told the court that the accused hid in the bushes along a foot path where he used to drag the children aged five, seven and ten years every morning as they went to school.

The accused was arrested on July 11 last year, when the minors reported the ordeal to their head teacher at Kiheo primary school in Losogwa village of Nyahururu district.

On that material date, the court heard that the children had arrived to school late and the teacher had to demand an explanation. The pupils disclosed the matter to the teacher and said that the man had been sexually molesting them daily as they went to school.

They also promised to take him to the suspect’s house him well. The shocked teacher rang their parents and reported to the Nyahururu police station.

The girls were later taken to the district hospital for treatment where one was found to have been infected with a venereal disease. The accused person was later arrested and taken to Nyahururu police station where he was charged with the three counts of defilement.

In mitigation, Mr Irungu said that he was an orphan and pleaded for leniency adding that he had suffered a lot while in remand as there wasn’t enough food.

Magistrate Mongare said that the offence committed was not only serious but heinous adding that it had been repeated several times.

“No matter how remorseful the accused person might appear, the Sexual Offences Act is very clear and my hands are tied. For the first, second and third defilement charges I sentence you to life imprisonment, each,” she said implying that even if the accused had three lives to live he would remain behind bars in all.

Mr Irungu has 14 days to appeal against the sentence.
