Kenyans top Madrid, Sao Paulo races

, MADRID, Jan 1 – Kenyan duo Moses Masai and Vivian Cheruiyot won the San Silvestre Vallecana men\’s and women\’s 10-kilometre race here on Thursday:

Meanwhile, Kenyan duo Pasalia Kipkoech and James Kipsang won their respective 15 kilometres Saint Sylvester Corrida races in Sao Paulo on Thursday.

Kipkoech beat home Serbia\’s two-time winner Olivera Jevtic while Brazilian Marily Dos Santos was third to win in a time of 52minutes 30seconds.

Two of the race favourites Kenya\’s Margaret Okayo, a two-time New York champion and who holds the record for the Rio de Janeiro Half-Marathon, and Ethiopia\’s Ymer Wude, who won this race last year, failed to live up to their billing and finished outside the first five.

Kipsang took his chance metres from the line, edging out two other Kenyans Elias Kemboi and three-time winner Robert Cheruiyot, in an official time of 44minutes 40seconds.

Tanzania\’s Martin Sulle had set the pace and at one point had a 60 metres lead over the chasing group but he began to lose his rhythm at the 7km mark and eventually dropped away to finish outside the first five.
