NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 18 – The Chairman of Kenya’s Muslim Human Rights Forum Al-Amin Kimathi was arrested on Monday over Friday’s demonstrations in Nairobi that led to the death of five people.
The outspoken campaigner was arrested when he went to the Nairobi Law Courts to follow proceedings of seven suspects who have been charged for taking part in the deadly demonstrations that also saw destruction of property estimated at more than Sh100 million.
There was drama at the High Court corridors when Mr Kimathi’s supporters attempted to block police from enforcing his arrest and at one point the prison warders had to draw guns to ward off the youth.
Police Spokesman Erick Kiraithe said: “Mr Kimathi will be charged for organising and participating in the deadly chaos among other offences.”
Meanwhile, the seven suspects denied charges which included unlawful protests, theft and destruction of property. The suspects have since been released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 pending their trial set for March 17.
Still at the Courts, parents of 35 former pupils of a Primary School whose Kenya Certificate of Primary Education English results were cancelled on allegations of cheating have lost a bid to stay the decision by Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
Justice Jean Gacheche declined to grant a temporary order barring KNEC from implementing its decision pending the hearing and determination of a suit fled by Olenguruone\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\’s Rehema Academy.
However, the judge allowed the applicants to file a substantive application to quash KNEC’s decision. Their advocate was given 21 days to file and serve the application on the respondents.
The case will be heard again on February 16.
