Kenya VP denies role in ranch saga

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 7 – Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has said his name should not be dragged into the controversial purchase of land from a ranch in Machakos by the Ministry of Information for an ICT centre.

The Vice President said he is not involved in the issue in any way and assured will not interfere with on-going investigations in the matter.

Speaking at Mulu Mutisya Gardens in Machakos Town where he addressed a public rally, Mr Musyoka said the intention to start the centre was good since it would create job opportunities for thousands, but lamented that the exercise was dogged by controversies.

Mr Musyoka who distributed several CDF cheques to groups from Machakos Town Constituency said the government was committed to initiating projects aimed at combating poverty, unemployment and disease amongst all Kenyans.

He disclosed that the Youth Enterprise Fund has Sh250 million for the youths and asked them to form groups through which they could apply for development loans.

Earlier, the Vice President attended a church service and presided over a fundraiser at the Mumbuni AIC Church where over Sh1 million was raised.

Mr Musyoka called on the Committee of Experts (CoE) to distribute copies of the Harmonised Draft Constitution in all parts of the country so that Kenyans can read it and make informed recommendations.

Mr Musyoka said the draft constitution is a vital document that must be read by all Kenyans to enable them determine their future and for the generations to come.

The Vice President at the same time reiterated that civil servants as Kenyans have a right to participate in the debate and they should not be hindered from doing so.

He commended the media for spearheading a balanced debate on the Draft and urged them to play an even more vibrant role.

Mr Musyoka revealed that the government has acquired heavy machinery for dam construction from China in its efforts to have the country shift from rain-fed to irrigation-based agriculture.

Addressing the function, Assistant Minister Bifwoli Wakoli rejected the hybrid form of Executive authority proposed in the draft constitution and urged Kenyans to decide on either Presidential or Parliamentary system.

Area MP Dr Victor Munyaka said the country should have a presidential system of government that will give the President executive powers.

Others who addressed the meeting included Kangundo MP Johnson Muthama who said he will not defend those implicated in the financial scandal surrounding the Malili Ranch where he is a member and his Mwala counterpart Daniel Muoki.
