Kenya police arrest man with 80,000 bullets

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 8 – At least 80,000 bullets and other assorted military weaponry have been confiscated from a businessman in Narok town.

Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere said on Tuesday that the weaponry which included guns, sleeping bags, military knives, boots and camouflage uniforms could have been on transit to another country.

“Some of the equipment do not belong to the Kenyan forces and it tells a lot about where these weapons or ammunition might have come from,” he told journalists at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) headquarters in Nairobi.

Some of the equipment bore the label of Eldoret-based Kenya Ordinance Factory Corporation and were impounded on Monday night from the businessman.

The Police Commissioner said two arrests had been made and investigations were underway to establish whether the suspect was part of a syndicate. However the suspects lawyer Cliff Omcapitalfmnew claimed that his client had been framed and was not part of any illegal business.

“The two pistols belong to my client and he is licensed to have them. The tyres and spares also belong to him including the camping equipment like the seats and sleeping bags which are there,” Mr Omcapitalfmnew said.

“He is an innocent citizen who is being framed by the police.” he stated

In October, a BBC report had stated that sophisticated firearms had become cheap and alarmingly available in Rift Valley Province in what was feared as rearming of the communities there.
