NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 29 – Njoroge Kamenju from Central Province is this year\’s top student in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education examinations. Mr Kamenju from Lily Academy in Githurai scored 438 marks while second placed Rabin Isaac got 435 marks. In the results released by Education Minister Sam Ongeri on Tuesday, Risper Chemtai came in third garnering 434 points.
“Girls performed better than boys in English objective, Composition, Kiswahili and Insha while boys performed better in Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Religious Education,” Prof Ongeri said.
A total of 720,054 sat the exams this year. Nationally there was improvement in seven out of the eight subjects compared to last year. However there was decline in the marks of the top pupil down from 460 marks last year.
This year’s candidature however saw an improvement in gender parity with the ratio of boys to girls standing at 53:47. Prof Ongeri said form one selection will take place on January 8.
Moments after the results were released, jubilation filled Lily Academy. Parents, teachers and pupils flocked the school to celebrate with Mr Kamenju. The top candidate was overwhelmed with joy and said his wish is to join Alliance Boys High school.
“I am very excited. It’s actually a surprise to me,” he said amid song and dance.
Headmistress Anne Muturi praised Kamenju for his hard work and discipline.
Meanwhile a total of 1904 candidates will have their results cancelled for cheating.
Prof Ongeri said the candidates came from 80 schools 33 of which are private schools. He regretted that for the first time in the history of the examinations mobile phones were used in cheating and a teacher arrested assisting pupils through text messages.
The Minister said disciplinary action will be taken against school administrators of the involved institution.
