NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 25 – The Capital Group on Friday joined orphans and staff of the Havilla and El-Shaddai Children Homes where they donated assorted items including food, clothing and other amenities this festive season.
Capital Group General Manager Cyrus Kamau pointed out that the initiative fell under the company’s corporate social responsibility.
“To me giving back is not something that you do because you are generous; it is actually something that you are required to do,” Mr Kamau stressed.
“Christmas is that time of giving so we identified those kids that are very needy who may not have the fantasy of enjoying this season with so much in their stomach. They are very innocent and they are the future of this country,” he added.
The homes are among some of the social initiatives that the Capital Group has assisted through its philanthropic arm – Capital Cares.
Mr Kamau also called on the youth to exercise self restraint during this festive season by not indulging in alcohol abuse or other social vices.
He emphasized the importance of them reaching out instead to the needy and assisting them.
“It is not only Christmas time that requires you to give. It is throughout the year. So even as you drink and make merry, let’s remember the real reason of Christmas.”
Most of the children living at the Havilla children’s home are orphans and currently, there are about fifty children at the home.
Others came from struggling, single parent households.
Founded in 2003, this orphanage is located in the impoverished community of Githurai outside of Nairobi.
Beginning with 15 children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, the home now supports close to 50 children, including 12 members of the Daraja African Children’s Choir.
