World Cup gets Somali beat

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 3 – K’Naan’s ‘WAVIN FLAG’ has been selected as the anthem for Coca-Cola’s 2010 FIFA World Cup.

A ‘Waving Flag’ remix will be used as the music element throughout the entire campaign, including as the soundtrack for all television commercials, during the trophy tour, and will also be featured on the online digital platform.

“K’Naan’s music is uplifting, inspiring and fits well with our celebration themed campaign,” said Carol Mbaga, the Coca-Cola Senior Brand Manager for FIFA 2010.

The track from his second album Troubadour features many elements of the original song but includes a pre-chorus that sets the uplifting, unified tone of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, turning the song into one that is “more open, more inviting, more celebratory,” K’Naan says.

“I’m so proud of this version,” K’Naan told Billboard Biz.

“We took something like 50 drums and did this crazy mix for it. It’s about the one time that we all get together and the world forgets its conflict and its problems and we focus on this unity and celebration.”

The Somali-Canadian hip-hop sensation will perform the song live during the African element of the FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola. The tour takes the trophy to 86 countries, including all the African nation.
