Kenyan MP accuses govt on reforms

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 9 – Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara has accused the government of lacking the desired commitment to deal decisively with last year’s post election violence.

He said the government has no practical commitment for healing the country as well as punishing the perpetrators of the poll violence.

“There has been total lack of political will on the part of the government. The Kiplagat Commission (Truth, Justice and Reconciliation) does not meet even half of the international community expectations. It is bound to fail, the government wants to bring half baked attempts,” he said.

He also said the lacklustre commitment by the government was highly demonstrated when International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo visited the country.

He said his visit was purely manned by the government – such that he was not allowed to see other people apart from the government – which could not give him the true picture on the ground.

Mr Imanyara further claimed that despite getting an appointment to see Mr Ocampo, the police denied him entry to his hotel. The civil society and victims were also denied the chance to meet with Mr Ocampo, he alleged.

That aside, the legislator insisted that the government should be held accountable for its failure to support the establishment of a local tribunal.

He said the government was only keen to establish mechanisms that will serve interests of leaders who are likely to be in the Waki list.

The legislator also threw the ball back to Kenyans’ court saying it is their responsibility to address the challenges and establish local institutions that will address their interests even in future.

He appreciated that the international community had done its best to bring the country together and push for reforms which are currently moving at a snail’s pace.

Mr Imanyara urged MPs to lead in the reform agenda as well as vote for his Bill that seeks to establish a local tribunal

Mr Ocampo has already indicated that he will deal with those who bear the greatest responsibility for the chaos whom he said was not more than five individuals.

Mr Imanyara said he hoped Parliament would approve his Bill during the last session of sittings this year.

Parliament was scheduled to resume on Tuesday afternoon after a recess of six weeks.
