Freed scribes leave Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Nov 26 – Two freelance journalists, one from Canada and the other from Australia, who were freed after 15 months in captivity in Somalia, left Mogadishu by plane on Thursday, witnesses said.

Canadian Amanda Lindhout, her head covered with a black veil, and Australian Nigel Brennan boarded a small private plane at Mogadishu airport shortly after arriving there with a big security escort made up of pro-government militia, the witnesses said.

The plane took off around 0545 GMT. There was no immediate indication as to where it was headed.

The two made no public statement and were kept away from journalists at the airport by their security escort.

The two were kidnapped by unknown gunmen on August 23, 2008 on the road leading from Mogadishu to Afgoye, 25 kilomtres (15 miles) to the west, where they intended to visit displaced camps.

One of their kidnappers, who refused to identify himself, told AFP a ransom of one million dollars (665,000 euros) had been paid for the release of the two.
