Two killed in Kiambu building collapse

KIAMBU, Kenya, Oct 19 – Two people have been killed and many more are trapped after a building collapsed in the middle of Kiambu Town on Monday afternoon.

As many as eleven people have been rescued after the three storey building under construction caved in at around 3.30 pm.

Witnesses said more than 20 people remained buried under debris.

Those rescued have been rushed to the Kiambu district hospital for treatment as rescue work continues at the site.

“Some construction workers on the first floor ran out of the building, but there are fears that others are trapped in building. There are reports that those trapped in the building have made phone calls to their colleagues and relatives,” said a statement from Kenya Red Cross.

“A foreman confirmed that at least 50 people were in the building.”

Kenya Red Cross Society’s volunteers from Kiambu Branch and a team from Nairobi are at the scene helping with rescue efforts. Ten people have been rescued and taken to Kiambu District Hospital for treatment.

Kenya Red Cross Society has pitched a tent at the scene to support rescue of victims, tracing missing persons, to provide First Aid and psychosocial support.

Also at the scene are doctors from Kiambu District Hospital and a team from the Nairobi Fire services.
