Quake hits Indian Ocean

WASHINGTON, Oct 12 – A strong earthquake measuring 6.0 hit a remote unpopulated area of the Indian Ocean early Monday, and there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, the US government reported.

The epicenter of the tremor, which occurred at 0315 GMT, was located 1,014 kilometers (630 miles) east northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius, said the US Geological Survey.

The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
