Botswana polls open

GABORONE, Oct 16 – Botswana polls opened Friday for the tenth democratic parliamentary elections in the diamond-rich nation widely hailed as being Africa’s most stable and successful democracy.

Nearly 725,000 voters have registered to vote in parliamentary and local government polls in the tiny southern African nation of 1.9 million people.

President Ian Khama’s ruling Botswana Democratic Party is expected to maintain the hold on power it has had since independence in 1966, despite bitter spats between factions within the party.

Seven political parties and 15 independent candidates are contesting the country’s 57 constituencies, however the main race is between the BDP, main opposition Botswana National Front and its offshoot Botswana Congress Party.
