Kibaki orders purchase of seeds

, NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 30 – President Mwai Kibaki has ordering additional funding for the purchase of maize seeds to be used in the forthcoming short rains.

The President asked the Ministry of Finance to avail an additional Sh1 billion for the project for seeds to be distributed to farmers in regions that experience short rains.

At a meeting to assess the food situation in the country, he further directed the Ministry of Finance to set aside additional funds for the purchase of one million bags of grains locally to replenish the strategic grain reserves and ensure that there is adequate relief food for the estimated 9.5 million people in need of food.

The President has also asked the Ministry of Water to redouble efforts in supplying water in areas suffering from severe shortage.

Government agencies responsible for relief food were also tasked to ensure that relief food is delivered in a timely manner to all Kenyans in need of food.
