NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 17 – Initial investigations into the weekend killing of an Administration Police (AP) driver attached to Cabinet Minister Amos Kimunya shows that he was executed.
Police say Sergeant John Kiriti was shot dead and his GK vehicle driven into the Mbagathi Way roundabout. It is believed the late Kiriti was attacked as he drove back to town after dropping off a relative in Ongata Rongai.
His wife Corporal Lucy Muthoni – also an AP officer – told Capital News that her husband had called to say he was in danger.
“He called to let me know that he was in danger and immediately his phone went unanswered when I tried to call him back,” she said.
“That is when I got worried and informed my seniors and neighbours, but soon after we received information that there was a GK vehicle at the roundabout with someone inside who needed help,” she added.
Security officers were mobilised only to find the late Kiriti lying dead on the passenger’s seat.
“It appears the scene was stage-managed because the vehicle was in the ditch. He had a single gun shot to the head and there was no much blood in the car, suggesting he may have been shot elsewhere,” a fellow officer who visited the scene said.
The vehicle’s hazard lights were on and the handbrake was still up.
“It is not possible that he was the one driving. Someone must have driven it and parked in the ditch,” the head of Security for Government Buildings (SGB) unit of the AP, Samwel Arachi said.
More baffling is the fact that the officer’s official pistol was well tucked in his waist but had fired six rounds.
“It is a mystery. Here is a man who left SGB headquarters a few minutes ago and his vehicle is being recovered in a ditch just a few metres from the residence of the APs with no rounds of ammunition in his pistol. Worse still he is shot in the head,” Mr Arachi said.
Senior police officers who arrived at the scene from Lang’ata Police station advanced a theory that the killing may have been a “war between the AP’s themselves.”
“It is not possible that happened. Not at all,” Mr Arachi said and urged the CID to expedite their investigations.
More puzzle
Mrs Kiriti told Capital News that a leather jacket the late Kiriti wore on the fateful night was torn at the back, suggesting he may have been dragged on the ground.
“When he left to escort our visitor, his jacket was ok, but it is puzzling because his jacket was torn from the back side. I still believe my husband was executed and not at that scene,” the mother of three said as she recalled her husband’s last moments.
She told Capital News that her husband left the house after having dinner with the family and promised to return as soon as he dropped their relative in Rongai.
“He is the one who dropped the Minister (Kimunya) at the airport when he left for Mombasa and he was scheduled to pick him when he returns. He spent the whole Saturday in the house relaxing because his boss was not around,” she added.
