Capital FM taps the Green Generation

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 21 – “As ordinary Kenyans, we can achieve much without waiting for our leaders to take action. We need to take charge of our environment, nurture it and leave it better for our future generations.”

These passionate words come from Capital FM’s Senior Presenter Eve De Souza to whom conserving Kenya’s abused environment is a dear project.

Protecting the country’s water catchment areas such as the forests, wetlands and rivers are crucial to providing food, water and power. As the political class shift blame and use the issue as a survival tool, Kenya is lavishing in indefinite power and water rationing.

All this can only be blamed on human and government ignorance and abuse of the environment.

But now, people of sound mind are willing to make every effort to restore the country’s former glowing environment.

In a joint initiative with Green Belt Movement and the European Union, Capital FM is spearheading ‘The Green Generation Campaign’ to restore the environment.

Ms De Souza who is behind its creation says the campaign seeks to appeal to people to help restore Kenya’s environment.

She says: “The reality is inexcusable; we are facing an ecological disaster of our own making! Our country is suffering from deforestation, soil erosion and pollution.”

The Green Generation Campaign targets to plant 10 million trees by 2010. Phase one of the initiative will kick off on September 5 at Karura Forest. Member countries of the European Union, The Green Belt Movement, secondary school and university students, the Mavuno Church, local celebrity musicians and Capital FM fans will congregate to plant trees at the forest.

On Aug 22, Ms De Souza says, Capital FM will attend the Mavuno Eco Festival at the Mavuno Dome on Mombasa Road. It will be graced by artists such as Eric Wainaina, Aaron Rimbui, Kanji Mbugua, and Muthoni (blankets and wine), Neema Ntalel, Juliani, M.O.G and Chit Chat.

Another precursor to the campaign will be held on September 23 when the Green Belt Movement takes the “Enough is Enough’ campaign to Thika Stadium. Performing artists STL (Kenyan artist based in Norway) Mr Lenny, Wakamba wawili, KNel will be there as well as the crowd-puller Capital Mix master djs.

The “Enough is Enough Campaign” – spearheaded by world renowned environmentalist Wangar Maathai –  also shares a common agenda of reclaiming grabbed public wetlands, rivers and forests.

Ms De Souza is appealing to Capital Group fans to join the campaign to either participate or provide any other support to make the exercise a success.
