PS shot, wounded in Nairobi

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 20 – Youth Affairs and Sports Permanent Secretary (PS) Kinuthia Murugu has been admitted to a Nairobi hospital after he was shot and wounded by armed thugs early on Saturday morning.

Police said that the PS was shot after he allegedly tried to reverse his vehicle to escape a gang that had waylaid him on Muringa road in Kilimani area.

“The suspects then opened fire, wounding him on the shoulder and made his vehicle to land in a ditch,” Deputy Police Spokesman Charles Owino said.

The thugs then robbed him of his money and other personal effects before escaping.

"He was taken to the theatre but doctors now says he is out of danger,” said former Defence minister Njenga Karume who visited Mr Murugu at his hospital bed.

Police have launched investigations into the 3am incident.

The attack comes barely ten days after a Member of Parliament (MP) was car-jacked and robbed of Sh50,000 as he headed home in Westlands, Nairobi.

Khwisero MP Evans Bulimo Akula was carjacked on June 9 and robbed before being freed unharmed after a three-hour ordeal.

He described the crime to Capital News as “the worst incident in his life” but said he was lucky to be alive for cooperating with the heavily armed gangsters.

The lawmaker said he was attacked as he was about to enter his compound on Rhapta Road at about 11 pm.

“When they asked for money, I said I could get them Sh50,000 and that was what was in the ATM. They stopped the vehicle and one of them asked for my PIN and went to the cash point,” he said.

“That is what saved me because when they got the money, they drove to Upper Hill and said it was a convenient location to abandon me,” he said.

The MP’s vehicle was recovered the next day at Kamai area in Kahawa West.

No arrests have been made yet.
