Kibaki: Keep politics out of law review

NJABINI, Kenya, Jun 10 – President Mwai Kibaki has reaffirmed that Kenya can attain a new Constitutional dispensation if all stakeholders set aside their partisan interests.

The President made the remarks on Wednesday at Njabini, Kinangop constituency where he joined the family, relatives and friends for the burial ceremony of the late Misheck Wachiuri Kimathi, son of the late freedom fighter Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi.

The President said that there remained only a few contentious issues which could be resolved if the interests of the nation preceded partisan ones.

The Head of State further urged leaders to avoid abusive language while debating national issues and also urged them to desist from using divisive tactics that undermine national unity.

During the occasion President Kibaki challenged every generation to make their contribution in building a better country in line with the vision of the nation’s founding fathers.

He challenged all citizens to commit themselves to serve their country with distinction by utilising their specialised skills and knowledge for the sake of the current and future generations.

President Kibaki said, “Every generation in the country must strive to leave the country better as demonstrated by independence heroes.”

The Head of State urged the public and leaders to be guided by the philosophy of Kenya’s first president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta who asked Kenyans not to dwell on the past but to focus on attaining unity and prosperity.

The President reaffirmed that the vision of the freedom fighters was to both liberate the nation and empower Kenyans into assuming the responsibility of managing their own affairs responsibly.

President Kibaki said that his Government recognised and would continue to honour independence heroes for the sacrifices they made for the country but noted that the country must shift focus to securing the future of current generations and those to come.

“The Government is focused on serving and improving the living standards of all Kenyans particularly the youth. The current generation of children is the key focus of the Government to secure their future which was the vision of our freedom fighters,” said the President.

He urged Kenyans to redouble their efforts in all their economic undertakings and further challenged parents to guide their children and mould them into responsible citizens who can take advantage of the many programmes established by the government to empower them.

The President asked the youth to abandon anti-social behaviours which ruined their health and also undermined their ability to participate ably in nation building.

The Head of State also commended Kenyans for their hard work which he noted had contributed enormously to the country’s economic growth as evidenced by visible indicators among them many development projects being implemented.

During the occasion the President also dismissed leaders who continue giving misleading information to the public for selfish interests particularly with regard to government’s support to freedom fighters and urged wananchi to ignore them.

He said that the Government will continue supporting the families of all freedom fighters in recognition of their sacrifices to the nation’s wellbeing.

President Kibaki hailed the late Wachiuri for his humility and contribution to the country’s unity through various peace initiatives particularly the community policing initiative.

Housing Minister Soita Shitanda termed President Kibaki as a leader who recognises and honours heroes from all corners of the country.

Mr Shitanda said that President Kibaki’s Government has contributed immensely towards improved welfare of independence heroes particularly the recognition of the mau mau freedom fighters and the permission for the registration of their association.
