Kenya anti graft czar on the defence

MERU, Kenya, Jun 21 – Kenya Anti Corruption Commission (KACC) director, Justice Aaron Ringera has defended his tenure at Integrity Centre saying he has succeeded in fighting graft in the country.

Justice Ringera pointed out that even though politicians and the media have variously vilified and bashed him over his performance in fighting corruption, he felt he had performed well.

"Even though politicians have not recognised my efforts to fight corruption, I know we have done it effectively. However, corruption remains one of the major challenges in this country," said the KACC chief executive whose tenure ends in September.

"In all the appointments I have taken up in this country, I have never applied for any.  I am considered because of my ability to perform," said Justice (Rtd) Ringera.

He was speaking at Githongo Boys Secondary School in Meru Central District where he was the guest of honour during the institution’s prize giving -education day.

The retired judge is an old boy of the school which produced one of the top boys in last year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education in Eastern Province, Simon Nyaga Ngugi who scored an aggregate ‘A’ plain.

Justice Ringera said effective political leadership in the country was lacking because Kenyans failed to elect credible and honest leaders, particularly Members of Parliament.

"Kenyans should not cry foul over bad leadership because they choose the wrong, dishonest leaders. You cannot choose somebody just because they have bribed you with some little money or other goodies," said the KACC director.

He said such leaders cannot be relied upon and challenged Kenyans to elect credible and honest leaders, capable of serving and representing them effectively.

Justice Ringera who turned down a gift given to him at the event, helped the school establish a modern computer laboratory and hailed the principal Mr Karagania Mathiu for the school’s good performance in last year’s KCSE.

The principal appealed to Justice Ringera and other former students to assist the institution to modernise the physical facilities, most of which are run-down and dilapidated.
