Child porn distributors nabbed

COPENHAGEN, Jun 16 – The homes of 81 people in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden suspected of downloading and spreading child pornography on the Internet were raided in a joint operation, police said Tuesday.

The exact number of arrests in the crackdown dubbed "Operation Viking" was not known.

A total of 19 people were detained in Denmark, where users of the file sharing network Edonkey were targeted, Danish police said.

The four police agencies had been gathering evidence since May against people suspected of downloading and distributing illegal child pornography.

They seized computers and other equipment believed to contain photos and films of sexual assaults against children, Danish police said.

"We have been monitoring the activity on this network (Edonkey) for two weeks, which gave us a good idea of what was going on," John Staale Stamnes, the head of the Norwegian criminal police unit for Internet crime, told AFP.

Norwegian police arrested 15 people, and "took action against the most serious cases. These were not cases of accidental downloads of child pornography," Stamnes said.

Finnish police said meanwhile they had raided 23 addresses.

The preliminary investigation and processing all of the seized material was expected to take at least several weeks, Mika Ihaksinen of Finland’s National Bureau of Investigation told AFP.

Swedish police said meanwhile in a statement that some 20 people across Sweden were nabbed in the raid.
