Kibaki briefed on DRC dialogue

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 6 – President Mwai Kibaki on Wednesday met and held discussions with the facilitator of the Eastern Congo peace negotiations, Olusegun Obasanjo.

The former Nigerian leader briefed  President Kibaki, who is chair of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region, on the progress made in the quest for peace and stability in the Eastern DRC, including the cessation of hostilities.

The facilitator informed President Kibaki that relative peace was returning to the troubled Country and expressed hope that the key political players would continue demonstrating goodwill so as to translate the existing agreements into action.

On his part President Kibaki commended the eminent African leader for his commendable achievements in facilitating cessation of hostilities among the parties to the conflict.

The President expressed optimism that the current peace and ceasefire will hold so that peaceful negotiations could be used to address the disputed issues.

The leaders agreed on the need for an extra-ordinary summit for the Great Lakes Region before the end of next month.

In attendance were Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula.
