Kenyan PM urges unity

MERU, Kenya, May 9 – Prime Minister Raila Odinga wants his political counterparts to forge unity of purpose and give the country the institutional reforms proposed in the National Accord.

The Premier wants leaders from the political divide to cede their tough positions and enter agreement with their perceived adversaries on some of the contentious issues that might derail the reform agenda.

“The coalition has the task to undertake reforms in the Judiciary, Police, Land, Electoral systems and enact a new constitutional order but all parties must compromise and reach consensus on issues that spark divided opinion,” Mr Odinga said.

The Premier told a funeral service in Tigania east constituency on Saturday that the Grand Coalition Government was formulated on the platform of instituting radical legislative changes to streamline governance structures and operations.

Mr Odinga urged leaders to embrace mutual respect and accommodate opposing to ensure that the country got a constitution before the expiry of the 10th parliament.

He at the same time censored a section of leaders for hitting the 2012 campaign trail barely two years after the country went through a traumatic post election experience saying it was too early to engage in such activities.

Mr Odinga said the country was still healing from the poll chaos that polarized the nation along ethnic lines and cautioned leaders to tread carefully as such activities could wash away the gains made.

“We must stop this campaign tempo and give room for the development of the country because the nation is yet to overcome four major challenges including ignorance, poverty, disease and bad governance,” he said.

The Premier made the appeal in Athwana village during the burial of the late Mzee M’Lithira M’mwiria, the father of assistant education Minister and Tigania East Member of Parliament Kilemi M’mwiria.

Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, Speaker of the National Assembly Kenneth Marende and Lands minister James Orengo also attended the ceremony.
