Incitement charges for former Kenya MP

MOMBASA, Kenya, May 13 – Former Internal Security Minister Geoffrey Githai (GG) Kariuki was arraigned before a Mombasa court on Wednesday and charged with incitement.

Mr Kariuki was charged with incitement to violence contrary to sec 96[a]of the panel code in the district.

The former Minister appeared before the Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Lillian Mukende and denied the charge.

Mr Kariuki, who is the leader of Mkenya Solidarity Movement Party, was charged that ‘on April 19 this year at Wogect Centre in Makupa without lawful excuse uttered words could lead to violence’.

The court heard that Mr Kariuki uttered; ‘’I will mobilise and bring together all the illegal groups who have powers to over throw the government during his meeting”.

The court heard that the words might be desirable to cause unrest in the country, an act which was calculated to lead to the destruction of property and causing of death.

Mr Kariuki, who was represented by lawyer Evans Monari, was released on a cash bail of Sh100,000 or a bond of Sh200,000 with a surety of a similar amount.

The case has been slated for July 23 and 24 this year.

At the same time, a warrant of arrest, which had been issued to the former Minister has been withdrawn after he presented himself before the Coast Provincial Police boss.

“I had to travel from Laikipia West to obey the order,” Mr Kariuki said.
