Kenya FM defends Annan

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 3 – Foreign Affairs Minister Moses Wetangula on Friday defended chief mediator Koffi Annan against allegations of meddling in the country’s political leadership and insisted he was justified in his work.

Reacting to numerous attacks from several politicians and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, the Minister said he was not aware of any instance when the former UN chief had meddled in the country’s leadership.

“I don’t know about meddling but if he was to meddle we will not allow him to meddle. So I don’t want to use words like ‘meddling’. Of course there are certain things we as Kenyans must do. Legislation for example is not a matter of Annan, it is a matter for our own parliament but once they legislate, where they provide for external content it must be adhered to,” he said.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Wetangula said there was still a lot to be done by parliamentarians and the Serena team in fulfilling all the agenda of power sharing.

“There is a lot to be done and that is why a lean Secretariat was maintained to oversee the remaining process,” he said.

The Vice President was quoted on Thursday saying the former UN chief should not be expected to ‘baby sit’ the government.

The remarks followed the Geneva talks where Kenya’s coalition government process was assessed.

During the high-profile meeting, the two Coalition partners-President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga were accused of failing to spearhead the establishment of a local tribunal to try post election suspects.

Wetangula said such are the issues to be discussed at the Kilaguni retreat where 12 Ministers converged with the two coalition partners to review the grand coalition success so far.

“We are going to discuss matters of managing the grand coalition and not who should be sacked from the Cabinet. Of course, the President can call to discuss that with us,” he told reporters.
