Wanjala is back

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 29 – Former Budalangi’ Member of Parliament Raphael Wanjala arrived back in the country on Sunday from India where he has been in detention for the past six months.

Mr Wanjala arrived at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly after 4pm where he was received by members of his family.

He was however not accompanied by Joyce Akinyi, a businesswoman who was also arrested together with him.

Mr Wanjala said Ms Akinyi was expected in the country by air from Entebbe, Uganda late on Sunday but her relatives indicated that she had decided to travel back by road.

"I have learnt a lot from my experience in India. I will be calling a press conference probably on Monday to outline what happened but for now am glad to be home," Mr Wanjala told journalist who had been waiting for him at the airport.

The two were arrested after they were found carrying Sh7.5million, which they failed to declare to immigration officials in New Delhi last October.

According to India’s Telegraph, the revenue intelligence department and the narcotics bureau were investigating if the money was to be spent on drugs.

They were released following intervention by Kenyan authorities.

Mr Wanjala is facing arrest after a warrant was issued by a Nairobi court after he failed to attend the hearing a case in which he is accused of assaulting a journalist.
