NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 25 – President Mwai Kibaki on Wednesday dismissed calls for fresh elections and asked those campaigning to wait for 2012.
He said General Elections would be held as scheduled and urged those behind the calls to focus on development which was the main reason that Kenyans elected them.
“If you want a position, you will get it after four years, not tomorrow. You will vie for the seat at the right time and you will get that seat if the public thinks you are fit for it. Concentrate on giving Kenyans what they elected you for,” he said.
Last week, the National Council of Churches of Kenya delivered a scathing review of the performance of the coalition, and called for fresh elections.
But addressing wananchi at Naitiri market in Bungoma North district, the President said Kenyans should remain united and support the Grand Coalition Government’s development efforts which, he insisted, was working together.
“We are united and we are in one government because we agreed to come together to form this government. We should remain united and support the Grand Coalition Government that draws representation from every part of the country,” he said.
He further urged politicians especially those in government to work as a team to satisfy the needs of Kenyans saying they will be judged according to their development records.
During his tour, the President laid a foundation stone for Naitiri District Hospital’s operation theatre and presented a Sh5 million cheque donated by Safaricom towards construction of the facility.
He used the opportunity to also direct the Ministry of Lands to fast track issuance of title deeds in the area to facilitate proper utilisation of land.
He also assured farmers in the area that they will have access to subsidised seeds and fertilizers.
To boost development in the area, President Kibaki said the government would also continue with the ongoing rehabilitation of roads in the district.
During his stop over in Busia District President Kibaki said that the government was focusing on implementing projects prioritised by Kenyans.
He authorised the construction of Busia Sugar Factory and promised that the government will also address challenges facing cotton farming in the district as well as ensure the completion of rural electrification to provide power to the residents.
The Head of State said an Italian investor had already expressed interest in constructing the factory.
The President said sugar cane farmers have the ability to produce quality sugar that is marketable in the local and international markets and asked the Agriculture Ministry to prioritise the project whose construction has been derailed for about 20 years.
The Head of State will wrap up his two-day tour of Western Province on Thursday.
Before winding up he will tour Samia district and address rallies in Busia town, then proceed to Lugari District.
He will then go to Bungoma East, Kakamega North and Kakamega Central Districts.
