Mercy Train ends first mission

NAIROBI, Kenya, March 30 – After three days of delivering food to about 10 hunger stricken areas in the country, the Mercy Train is back in Nairobi.

The train laden with over Sh17 million worth of food aid pulled out of the Nairobi Railway station on Friday morning for distribution to areas between Nairobi and Mombasa.

Capital FM has partnered with the Standard group, Kenya Railways Corporation, Kenya Commercial Bank and Tuskys supermarket in a three week campaign to collect funds to assist in alleviating hunger.

Deputy News Editor Laura Walubengo who was on the Mercy Train said they made drop offs at Ulu, Kiu, Kima, Sultan Hamud, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Mackinnon road and Samburu.

“These are the places we stopped to distribute food and about 600 families benefited in each stop,” she said.

She added that about 336 bales of flour and several cartons of cooking oil were distributed in all the points.

“There were more families at the distribution stops than we could benefit,” Ms Walubengo added.

The Mercy Train carried 80 metric tonnes of food as it traversed its first leg.

Kenya Railways General Manager Golicha Tatache explained that the Mercy Train would make deliveries in other parts of the country in the second leg of the Capital FM co-sponsored relief initiative.
