Woman sees fire after sex hitch

MERU, Kenya, Feb 11 – A man whose advances were spurned by a commercial sex worker in Meru has settled the score by burning her house down on Tuesday night.

The man, who is said by witnesses to have argued with the woman because he was unable to afford her rates, set fire to the woman’s house, but ended up razing the entire residential block leaving more than 20 families displaced.

The incident took place at the Gakoromone area within the Meru Municipality, according to witness and tenants at the semi-permanent structure.

“We heard them arguing over the issue before the man left grumbling. The man later returned and put the house on fire,” a tenant claimed.

He said the man was seen sneaking back after being turned down at around 8pm before disappearing again and shortly after smoke and fire were seen coming from the house.

Attempts by tenants and neighbours to put out the blaze were futile. The said sex worker returned afterwards only to find that her property had been razed to the ground.

Nothing was salvaged from the inferno including two goats.

According to our correspondent, by Wednesday morning, street children were eating meat from the charred goats’ carcasses (nyama choma) as the displaced residents mourned their losses.
