ZAGREB, Feb 6 – Croatia has provided all the documents it has to the UN war crimes court trying former general Ante Gotovina, according to deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor.
"We have submitted the prosecutor absolutely everything we’ve found and we sent him a new report on that at the end of January," she said following a meeting with UN war crimes prosecutor Serge Brammertz.
"The government does have any reason to hide anything," said Kosor, adding any additional document found would be turned over.
Brammertz travelled to Zagreb Thursday to discuss the documents, which his spokeswoman has said were related to the use of artillery during the Balkan war in the 1990s.
Gotovina faces charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.
The former general is accused of having led a Croatian offensive to drive out Serbs from the south of Croatia in 1995, leading to the displacement of more than 200,000 and the death of 350 civilians.
According to Croatian TV the documents that Brammertz is seeking are the artillery fire logs from that offensive.
Brammertz’s spokeswoman Olga Kavran said Wednesday that the documents are "…important for our case".
Gotovina’s arrest in Spain in 2005, after spending four years on the run, sparked protests in Croatia where he is seen as a hero who ended the 1991-1995 war.
Balkan countries such as Croatia that want to join the European Union must cooperate fully with the ICTY before they will be considered for membership.
