NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 7 – Three Burn Specialists from Gujarat, India arrived in the country on Saturday morning to assist Kenyan medical personnel in treating the victims of the Molo fire tragedy.
The plastic surgeons Dr Mohmed Sheikha, Dr Manav Suri and Dr Nitin Parmar arrived with 120kg of antibiotics, following an appeal by Prime Minister Raila Odinga to the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, for medical assistance.
Director of Medical Services Dr Francis Kimani, who was at hand to receive them, thanked the Indian government for extending the much needed assistance.
“We are grateful to you for giving us a hand in this time of crisis and for bringing these medical supplies,” said Dr Kimani.
He said the specialists would be posted to the hospitals hosting the worst affected victims.
The trio joins another two specialists who arrived in the country last Wednesday.
Dr Ravi Narayan and Dr Sameek Bhattacharya have already spent the last two days at the Nakuru Provincial General Hospital, where most of the survivors of the Molo blaze are admitted.
The experts are expected to offer much-needed medical treatment to the survivors, who are currently fighting for their lives.
The Indian Government has also provided drugs and dressing materials and another ten more doctors are expected in the country.
Meanwhile Deloris Jordan, the founder of the Jordan Foundation has announced that the American Burn Association will also send burn specialists to assist the victims of the tragedy.
Speaking during the just concluded ‘Kenya We Want’ Conference, Mrs Jordan said the specialists would come following an appeal by Mr Odinga to the US government.
The American Burn Association is an association of about 3,500 physicians, nurses, fire-fighters, occupational and physical therapists and hospitals with burn centres, with membership in the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and Latin America. The association promotes burn related research, rehabilitation, care and prevention services.
More than 180 people suffered varying degrees of burns in the Molo fire tragedy, after a petrol tanker burst into flames last Tuesday at Sachagwan.
So far 132 people have succumbed to their injuries.
