NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 2 – January salaries for Primary School teachers will be delayed by at least one week, according to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
TSC’s Public Relations Manager Nkatha Murungi confirmed to Capital News on Monday that the pay would be released between February 4 and 5, ten days later than the usual release day of the 25th day of every month.
“The Finance Manager has told me they will release the money between Wednesday and Thursday this week,” Mrs Murungi said.
She said teachers who bank with the National Bank would access the money immediately.
“For those in other banks it entirely depends on their processing procedures but by Monday, the money should be in their accounts,” Mrs Murungi assured.
According to a source at the Commission, the pay-roll was in its final stages on Monday. Secondary School teachers are however not affected by the delay and will get their pay on time.
TSC had frozen the pay last Monday, a week into the strike, pending verification by officials on those who had abandoned their duty and the days they were out of class.
However, while signing a pay deal with the teachers last Thursday, Education Minister Sam Ongeri assured the educators that they would receive their pay in full.
A top official of the Kenya Union of Teachers (KNUT) had confided that the government had informed the union the perks would be late, as the processes had been halted. Ordinarily, the teachers get their pay between the first and fifth days of the month.
KNUT called off its nine-day strike last Thursday after signing a deal with the government on a pay increase to be spread across 25 months.
