The Obamamania wave

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 20 – As Barack Obama took the helm at the White House in Washington on Tuesday, the tiny village where his father was born – Kogelo – was wrought with celebration.

Hundreds converged in Kogelo village at a secondary school named after President Obama to witness the momentous occasion.

“Kogelo is lively and we are happy because our son has made it to the top of the world,” said Otieno Ojwang.

“My mind is like I am a citizen of America and the world has totally changed,” added another of those present at the now famous village.

The ‘Obamamania’ wave swept across Kenya as the son of a man with Kenyan descent was sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America.

Entertainment joints in the Kenyan capital Nairobi were filled to capacity as citizens were glued to big screen televisions to witness the making of history.

‘Inspirational’ was the feeling from those interviewed by Capital News on the streets of Nairobi.

“It gives us the impetus to work harder and achieve these things,” expressed Dan Omolo.

“You feel like it’s your brother doing this things, it’s a brotherly kind of love,” added his friend Michael Mbugua, as the two walked to the stage to board matatus for home.

Many Kenyans feel connected to the man who is now in charge of the most powerful nation in the world. They were all inspired by the President’s words of hope.

“He has made us (Kenyans) proud. He has mentioned the village of Kogelo though not by name,” said Kimutai Bisok enthusiastically.

Both President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga sent their congratulatory messages.
