NAIROBI, Kenya, January 29 – Tusker Coach James Nandwa escaped death by a whisker after he got trapped in the inferno at Nakumatt Downtown on Wednesday afternoon.
Nandwa had to break through the roof before jumping down as he made frantic efforts to escape the ill fated Supermarket.
At the same time, Tusker Club Chief Executive Officer Peter Serry who was with Nandwa at the time of the fire is still missing.
Family and friends were on Thursday making frantic efforts to find out the whereabouts of the former Harambee Stars team manager.
Nandwa who was discharged from hospital on Thursday explained that he and Serry had gone to the supermarket to do shopping for their newly signed players.
“We had gone to buy things for our players who we have signed from upcountry and we were on first floor when the fire broke out,” said Nandwa.
“We the dashed to the fire escape but it was locked. We then had to climb a ladder to get nearer to the roof where we managed to remove some of the iron sheets and managed to climb on top from where we then jumped down,” he said adding, "it was chaotic as we all tried to get out and thankfully i made it."
He was discharged on Thursday afternoon and immediately made a beeline for Nakumatt to help with the search of Serry.
“We have gone round to all hospitals and mortuaries but still haven’t got any news about Serry but we are hopeful that we will soon get some information,” said Nandwa.
A former national team players, Nandwa joined Tusker last year after a successful stint with Naivasha side Sher Karuturi. He was also an assistant to former Stars coach Francis Kimanzi.
