Cattle raiders strike in Samburu

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 12 – Eight people were killed and dozens injured when armed bandits raided a remote village in Samburu late Sunday, police said.

The more than 100 bandits from the neighbouring Turkana community raided Kawap village in Baragoi division and stole nearly 8,000 cattle.

Police said five of them were herdsmen who were shot dead during the confrontation as they tried to secure their animals while the three others were rustlers.

“We are yet to establish the exact number of those injured,” Rift Valley Provincial Police chief Joseph Ashimala said.

“Our officers were able to collect the bodies from the forest on Monday,” he added.

“We are still pursuing them. We have not been able to get them yet but our officers are still on the ground,” he said and added that security had been beefed up to ease tension in the region.
