Raila forms team on Eastleigh roads

NAIROBI, December 1 – Prime Minister Raila Odinga has formed an inter-Ministerial committee to address the dilapidated state of infrastructure in the busy Eastleigh estate, Nairobi.

The taskforce will include officials from the ministries of Local Government, Nairobi Metropolitan Development and Roads. Others are officials from Nairobi City Council and members of the business community in the area.

"We have seen the sad state in this area that despite the magnificent buildings and other development the roads here are full of potholes. We want to come up with immediate solutions to the sewerage system," he said.

The committee is expected to come up with short and medium term solutions to the sorry state of affairs in the business centre.

The Prime Minister instructed the committee to specifically address the collapsed road network, street lighting and sewage and garbage collection and make appropriate recommendations to the government within the two weeks.

“The government gives services to the tax payers as an obligation and it is a right for the wananchi (citizen) to demand good services from the government,” Mr Odinga said adding that the government would be addressing similar issues in other major towns in the country to make them business friendly.

The Prime Minister, at the same time, ordered the Ministry of Public Works to cancel contracts of companies that had done shoddy work, and others that delayed completion their work.

“We cannot continue hiring people whose work brings disrepute to the government,” he said adding that their contracts would be cancelled and given to those who can deliver.

Mr Odinga urged the business community in the area to diversify their investments in line with the expectations of Vision 2030.

The visit was however interrupted by ‘hungry’ residents who demanded that the Prime Minister address the high price of maize flour. Mr Odinga promised action within the day. "The price of unga (maize flour) must come down," he promised.
