April 3-4: North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Strasbourg, France, and nearby Kehl in Germany.
May 6: The Group of Eight industrialised powers hold their annual summit on the Italian island of La Maddalena.
May 13-24: Cannes film festival, France.
June 7: European parliament elections across the 27 nation European Union.
July 1: Sweden takes over from the Czech Republic as president of the European Union.
October 6-7: The World Bank and International Monetary Fund hold their annual meetings in Istanbul.
October: Annual Nobel Prize awards.
