Kenyans sweep up ING titles

TAIPEI, Taiwan, Dec 21 – Carolina Kilel of Kenya on Sunday broke the Taipei marathon women’s record and bagged a new personal best in a day dominated by the African nation.

Kilel was awarded a cash prize of 1.33 million Taiwan dollars (41,015 US) — double the usual winner’s fund — after completing the course in 2hrs 30mins 44secs, 12 seconds faster than the previous record.

The time also knocked 26 seconds off her previous personal best, achieved when she came third in the 2006 Prague marathon.

Tabitha Tsatsa of Zimbabwe came second with a time of 2hrs 35mins 46secs while Suzuki Junko of Japan came in third at 2hrs 45mins 25secs.

In the men’s race Sammy Chumba, also of Kenya, clocked 2hrs 15mins 37secs to take the 660,000 Taiwan dollars (20,307 US) prize money.

His countrymen Chelimo Luka Kipkemboi (2:15:43) and Lawrence Kiptoo Saina (2:16:32) came in second and third respectively.

A total of 27,000 people competed in the 42.2 kilometres event while 94,000 others took part in the half-marathon and three other events.

Michael Essien said: “I am aware of my responsibility as a role model and am pleased to be able to use this to hopefully influence people positively and encourage them when they drink, to consume alcohol responsibly."

The campaign is part of EABL’s ongoing commitment to make real progress in cutting alcohol misuse and making responsible drinking a valued part of life.

“EABL is committed to educate consumers about enjoying alcohol responsibly as part of a healthy lifestyle. That is why Guinness is launching this new campaign this festive season to encourage consumers to ‘Stay On Side and enjoy alcohol responsibly’. There are a number of ways in which consumers can consumer alcohol responsibly, including eating food and drinking water between alcoholic drinks and not drinking and driving,” said the Guinness Brand Manager Agnes Kinga.
