Mixed luck for Kakamega in Dubai

NAIROBI, November 27 – Kakamega High School enjoyed mixed fortunes on the opening day of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Dubai seven-a-side tournament which kicked off today at the new venue ‘The Sevens’.

A puncture in the bus they were travelling from the hotel and heavy traffic saw Kakamega High miss the first match against Dubai Knights, a match they could have easily won.

But the national champions who are playing against very bigger opponents in the international under-19 category came back roaring to beat South Africa’s Lydenburgh Rhinos 19-5. The two teams had tied 5-5 at half time.

Felix Ayange, the Kakamega High captain scored the first try before Lydebnurgh Rhinos leveled just before the break.

After the break, Joash Yongo raced over for the second try which Fabian Olando converted to break the deadlock and restore the lead 12-5. Olando scored and converted the third try.

Ayange said Kakamega High were slow off the blocks. ‘It was the first match and we very cautious until in the second half when the coach told us some of the mistakes we had made in the first half,” noted the captain.

At half time, coach Ochieng Ahaya instructed the players to play to their strength and not be drawn in their opponent’s game.

The next match is against a Welsh side Urdd.
