Kamangu death probe launched

NAIROBI, November 17 – Police on Monday said they have launched formal investigations into the death of James Kamangu, the alleged husband of Starehe MP Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.

Mr Kamangu died in August at the Kenyatta National Hospital after a short illness.

The Officer in charge of Operations at Gigiri police division Mr Dishon Chadaka told family members and journalists that formal investigations into the death had been instituted.

The family which was accompanied by their lawyer had turned up to collect a copy of a post-mortem report on Mr Kamangu’s death.

“Unfortunately, we will not issue you with a copy of the post-mortem report in our possession because the matter is under investigations. Kindly understand,” Mr Chadaka told the family members.

He advised the family to contact the Government pathologist or the family doctor who witnessed the post-mortem if they needed a copy of the report.

“Kindly be advised that we never issue post-mortem reports to family members of the deceased. We only obtain it from the pathologist because we intend to rely on it in our investigations. And that is the standard procedure,” he added.

Mr Chadaka revealed that there was foul play in the death but could not divulge further details.

Gigiri divisional Police chief Mr David Kerina told off the family members and warned Mr Chadaka against ‘wasting time’ explaining to them.

“You are just wasting time on these people, you have told them as much,” he said.

The late Kamangu died on August 10 after vomiting and complaining of stomach pains.

He had earlier been treated at the Kiambu district hospital before he was transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Some of his family members claimed he had been poisoned and even blamed it on one of his wives.

During his burial at Gachie village, mourners were told that he had left behind two wives, including Dr Wanjiru.

Dr Wanjiru has repeatedly disowned the deceased despite his claims that they were married under the Kikuyu customary laws.
